Sweet Peas
Bloom time: Early spring to autumn.
When Sweet Peas were introduced in England from Sicily over 300 years ago, the first blooms were small, highly fragrant and grew well in the warm summer sun. Since then, flower growers have selected and bred their favorites for different characteristics. They got larger flowers on longer stems for cut flowers and exhibition. Today we find that sometimes scent has been lost in the quest for larger flowers. Fragrance seems to be related to colour with the lavender and light pink flowers the most fragrant and the scarlet shades the least fragrant. Here on the West Coast, our usual cool summer weather allows us to grow all the types and enjoy more fragrance than in hot summer areas.
Flowering is triggered by day length.
Cuthbertson Mix
A very highly scented mix of cutting varieties in shades of pink, cream, white with picotee ediging, and lavender. Prepare to be amazed by the intense fragrance. Climbs to 1.8m (6') tall.
Henry Eckford
Part of the Old Fashioned HEIRLOOM series, Henry Eckford produces breathtaking pastel red blooms in full sun, on tall plants that grow to 2.5m (8'). Grown in partial shade, the flowers are a rich orange that contrast beautifully with the pale green foliage. One of the best for forcing, and possibly the most extravagant colour choice of all sweet peas.
High Scent
If you want fragrance in the garden, this sweet pea is the one. We were really impressed by the intense, luxurious aroma. And the flowers keep their High Scent even cut for bouquets. Florists will love this variety. Flowers are white with bluish edging, born on long stems. Overall height to 120cm (4').
Late Spencer Blend
Late Spencer sweet peas blend have all of the beautiful, bold colours that we love in these reliable Late Spencer performers - red, pink, white, rose, purple and blue in one convienient package.
Tip:
Sweet Peas must be cut every 2 to 3 days to keep the blooms coming! If any seed pods form cut them off to keep the plant blooming.
Lord Nelson
Rich navy blue HEIRLOOM sweet peas on tall vines for the trellis or arbour. Fantastic scent and reliable, steady growth. Keep them picked for an abundance of blooms to late summer.
Mammoth Blend
Earliest to flower, Mammoth has big, bold blooms, making this an excellent choice for early spring colour. Striking shades of crimson, lavender, deep rose, navy blue, rose pink, and salmon, these climbers are 1.6m (6ft) and perfect for that first table bouquet.
Matucana
These most unusual ITALIAN HERITAGE sweet peas are bi-coloured violet and deep maroon. Matcuna is thought to be one of the first sweet peas to be introduced to Britain in 1700 by a Sicilian Monk, Franciscus Cupani. Matucana sweet peas have an intoxicating scent and smaller flowers than many modern varieties that bloom over a long period. Grow some history. This sweet pea is sure to please!
Old Spice Blend
This wonderful collection of extremely old HEIRLOOM varieties have extraordinary heat resistance and highly fragrant flowers. These are the best types for hot summers. Old Spice Blend is very fragrant and heat tolerant. This vining 1.8m (6ft) plant produces blooms in shades of white, cream, pink, rose, scarlet, and purple.

They flower from June to September and prefer cool summer areas such as Coastal BC.

Wild Yellow
Lathyrus chloranthus
Finally, we have tracked down this yellow-flowering wild species for 2010. Wild Yellow really is a wild species of sweet pea from central Asia, and grows to about 2.5m (97") if grown in fertile soil in a warm and sheltered spot. What a beauty!
