Mescluns and Salad Greens
Mesclun means a "mixed-up mess of baby greens." They are a boon for cooks looking for variety in a hurry - a diverse assortment of small leaves can be picked daily for salads. You can pick individual leaves or shear off the whole patch about 2cm (1") from the ground. The plants will re-grow and can be cut again. There are many combinations of flavours and textures. Our custom blends allow you to select a mix that suits your palate. Easily grown in containers where space is limited.
Corn Salad
Also known as Lamb's Lettuce, Corn Salad, Mâche, Feldsalat, Ackersalat and Rapunzelsalat. The small, pretty, tender green leaves of this green form a rosette that is very cold hardy. It has a mild and nutty flavour and can be planted early spring and again in late August. Seeds sprout best in cool, moist soil. Sow thinly 1cm (1/2") deep in rows 30cm (1') apart. Thin to 5cm (2") or broadcast seeds about 2.5cm (1") apart. Tolerates damp conditions well. Mildew tolerant.

Curly Cress Peppergrass
Lepidium sativum
Rapidly-growing, frilly leaves leap out of the ground. A little really spices up a salad or sandwich. Plant a small amount frequently or grow indoors as sprouts. Cole family.

Edible Chrysanthemum
Leucanthemum coronarium
Commonly known as tong hao in Chinese, shungiku in Japanese, ssukgat in Korean and cải cúc or tần ô in Vietnamese. The mildly bitter leaves of this annual are frequently used in Japanese recipes as Shungiku. The flowers, which grow to around 1.3m (4') tall, are various shades of yellow, and are also edible - outstanding additions to salads or any other food if used as a garnish. Grow as you would an ornamental flower, in rich, well-drained soil, and the sometimes bicoloured flowers will bloom from spring to fall. Grows well in cool Coastal gardens!

Garden Purslane
This hot weather plant provides handfuls of thick, succulent, green leaves that add a light lemony crunch to salads. Leaves are much larger than the wild type and the plant grows upright, not prostrate. An excellent source of natural antioxidants. Sow indoors or out in late May when soil is really warm. It can be cut almost to the ground but keep two leaves at the base for re-growth. Garden Purslane self-sows if allowed to flower.

Garland Chrysanthemum
This version of Shungiku, or edible chrysanthemum has rounded leaves, but the same stimulating flavour as the frilly leaf version above (MU534). Very tasty and unusual for salads or stir-fries.

Large Leaf Sorrel
This vigorous perennial plant provides huge pickings of delicious, lemony, dark-green leaves from March to November. Sow May to June 1cm (1/2") deep in rows 45cm (18") apart. Grow plants 30cm (12") apart. Use in salads or soup. Cut off seed stalks.

Mild Mesclun
This mild-flavoured blend is a perfect stand-alone salad mix, suitable for spring and fall planting. Two Oriental greens add texture; a red and a green leaf lettuce provide colour; corn salad adds sweetness; and kale is for abundance.
Miners Lettuce
Montia perfoliata syn. Claytonia perfoliata. Known also as Winter Purslane due to the succulence of its leaves and stems, this native California weed is actually sweet tasting, not tart like true purslane. leaves grow individually on long stems, but should be cut to no more than 5cm (2") in length. Harvest with scissors, just above the crown of the plants and it will grow back up to three times. Don't allow it to flower unless you're saving seeds. Claytonia is quite cold hardy. Given some protection, it can be grown all winter.

Mustard Greens Blend
This is a delightful blend of five easy-to-grow, open pollinated favourites that will add variety to your meals. Plant in early March, then again in late July/Aug for fall and winter harvest. Enjoy the leaves while small in salads; stir-fry the larger leaves. Space plants at least 20cm (8") apart. Cole crop. (open pollinated seeds)
Nicoise Mesclun
Add zing and nutrition to your salads. This blend of salad greens includes arugula, curled endive, curly cress, cutting chicory, dandelion, and onion greens. Traditional European flavours are a delight for the adventurous.
Orach Ruby Red Mountain Spinach
CERTIFIED ORGANIC! This little known relative of Amaranth and Quinoa produces reddish-brown, tender leaves and stalks that can be used fresh in salads or cooked. The leaves have an intriguing, slightly salty flavour. Orach is a hardy and vigorous annual that grows to 80cm (32") tall. Fast growing! Sow seed directly when the earth can be worked and weather is warming up.

Purslane Tall Green

Saladini Blend
A fine way to sample a variety of unusual greens: choi sum, komatsuna, mizuna, pac choi, giant red mustard, red lettuce, and spinach. A very pleasing and attractive combination of colours and textures.
Stir~Fry Blend
For cooks in a hurry, this blend will stand ready in the garden for a quick harvest - delicious with onions and some daikon radishes, it makes for a quick and nutritious meal. The blend includes komatsuna, pac choi, choy sum, bau sin, red kale, giant red mustard, shungiku, and tah tsai. Space these plants well to let them develop to full size.
Tangy Mesclun
Tart and tantalizing, our tangy mesclun is a unique blend of red and green lettuce mixed with arugula, endive, green onions and upland cress. Cut and use for your salad or as a salad topper to provide zing.
Watercress
Nasturtium officinale
This perennial cress is rich in vitamins and has a delicious, distinctive taste for salads and vegetarian dishes. Little, dark-green leaves grow on crisp stems that come from thick, long roots. Direct-seed watercress about 5mm (1/4") deep and 1cm (1/2") apart, ideally in full sun near clear running water. Thin to 10cm (4") and keep very well watered. Cole family. Matures in 60 days. West Coast Market Mix
Modeled on the Parisian Market Mix, our signature mix offers a wonderful array of delicate tastes and colors. It includes finely cut curly endive, tender sweet red-leaved oak leaf lettuce, wavy rich dark green escarole, blonde chicory and just the right amount of arugula and chervil.
Winter Blend
This famous salad mix from the Provencal region of France combines the tangy flavours of arugula, chervil and endive with Italian parsley and 3 colourful, winter-hardy French lettuces. This makes a wonderful salad mix that looks great in the winter garden or planters. For winter harvest, plant by mid-August.
Wrinkled Crinkled Curly Cress
This variety of cress does not bolt as quickly as the regular Curly Cress and its leaves are more folded and less delicate. Use in salads and sandwiches for “punch.”
